If you are wondering what to serve with prime rib, we have an incredibly delicious line up of suggestions for you below. These side dishes are tried and true pairings loaded with flavor to make a prime rib dinner complete for any occasion.

Traditional Sides for Prime Rib

The best sides for prime rib are the most traditional sides! These are classic prime rib side dishes that you will find traditionally served with prime rib, whether at a restaurant, or Christmas dinner.

Brussels sprouts on a baking sheet made as a side for prime rib
Crispy Herb Roasted Potatoes on baking sheet ready to serve with prime rib for christmas
  • Sauteed Mushrooms with Garlic Butter– Mushrooms are one of the best sides for prime rib, and these are insanely delicious!
  • Potatoes– Many types of potato recipes go well with prime rib! From traditional garlic parmesan mashed potatoes, to our crispy herb roasted potatoes, easy Instant Pot baked potatoes to free up the oven, or decadent au gratin potatoes, you can’t go wrong.
  • Roasted Brussels Sprouts– These crispy brussels sprouts are quick and incredibly delicious!
  • Creamed Spinach– decadent and steakhouse worthy, but you can do sautéed spinach to keep it lighter.
  • Garlic Bread– This is my go to recipe. It will not disappoint!
  • Roasted Vegetable Medley– These are super delicious and a lighter option.
  • Yorkshire pudding– If you want to serve prime rib the traditional English way, this is a go to!

Sauces to Serve with Prime Rib Roast

Serving prime rib with sauce is a great way to add a boost of flavor. Since sauce is so easy to prepare ahead, I like to offer a couple of options to let each person pair the prime rib with the flavor they like best.

Cranberry sauce in a bowl used as a sauce to serve with Prime Rib
  • Horseradish sauce– This is the most traditional sauce to serve with prime rib. This can be purchased at the store or made from scratch.
  • Cranberry Sauce– During the holidays and especially at Christmas dinner, cranberry sauce is often paired with prime rib. This recipe can be made a week in advance and only has 3 ingredients!
  • Gravy– A brown gravy made from drippings is a great way to enhance the rich meaty flavor of the prime rib.

Salads to Serve with Prime Rib

A salad is the perfect way to start a menu featuring prime rib. It is lighter, which will compliment the meal without overfilling since prime rib is heavy.

House Salad paired with prime rib as a side dish
Wedge salad to serve with prime rib
  • Steakhouse Salad– This salad tastes like the house salad served at many popular steakhouse restaurants.
  • Caesar Salad– Simply toss chopped romaine lettuce with parmesan, croutons, and caesar dressing for a simple and classic caesar salad.
  • Wedge Salad– Like steak, a wedge salad is also a great side for prime rib because the tanginess of the blue cheese really sets off the savory beef flavor. Using the homemade dressing makes this salad truly special!

Easy Side Dishes for Prime Rib

Prime rib can be a commitment to cook, so if you need some sides that are easy and won’t take much time to prepare, these are a few of my favorites. They use simple ingredients and quick and easy methods to make cooking easy!

Recipe Notes

*Tip* If you’d like to turn this into a sweet potato casserole, put your potatoes into a casserole dish, add a cup of mini marshmallows and bake at 350°F for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on it during the last few minutes to ensure the marshmallows are golden brown and the casserole is heated through.
