Recipe Variations
If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!
- Spice it up – The hot sauce adds a delicious layer of spice, but if you want some extra heat, try sprinkling in some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes OR chopped jalapeño.
- Add a protein – Fill your dip out by mixing in cooked and crumbled bacon or shredded, cooked chicken.
- Lighten it up – Lighten your dip up just a little bit by swapping the sour cream out for plain Greek yogurt.
Recipe Step by Step
I am going to highlight a few key steps in the recipe here, but make sure to jump down to the recipe card for comprehensive instructions on how to make Slow Cooker French Onion Dip.

Cut each onion in half, discard the ends and the peel, then slice into thin strips. Place into your crockpot, then season with salt and pepper. Toss well, then cook on low for 8 hours.

Once the onions are cooked, add in the sour cream, cream cheese, mayonnaise, and hot sauce.

Mix to fully combine, then taste and re-season if needed.

Transfer your dip to a serving dish, then dig in!
Recipe Tips
- Thinly slice the onions – I recommend slicing the onions pretty darn thinly so they get deliciously soft in the crockpot.
- Cook on low – Low and slow is key for that perfect onion texture and flavor.
- Soften the cream cheese – Softened cream cheese incorporates beautifully into the rest of the dip. Give it around 30 minutes on the counter to avoid any lumps.
Recipe Short Cuts
If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!
- Cook the onions in advance – Since it takes 8 hours, feel free to cook your onions overnight, then assemble your dip the next day!
- Make ahead and store – This dip will last 3-4 days in the refrigerator without losing any of that delicious flavor and texture. Feel free to prep it ahead of time to be served later on.
- Use onion soup mix. Want an extra short short cut? Skip the slow cooker and onions altogether, and mix everything in a bowl with Homemade Onion Soup Mix.

Recipe FAQ’s
Why is my Onion Dip watery?
Sour cream can separate as it sits, so that can cause the dip to look a little bit watery. If you notice some separation, simply give it a stir and you’re back to that perfect creamy texture.
Can you freeze Onion Dip?
Technically, yes. Onion dip will last in a freezer-safe container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Keep in mind that freezing and thawing a creamy dip can affect the texture slightly.

Crockpot Onion Dip
Ingredients
- 3 large onions, or 4 medium onions
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 4 ounces cream cheese (half brick), softened
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 teaspoon hot sauce, optional
Instructions
- To prepare the onions: Half each onion and discard the ends and peel. Then slice each half into thin strips.
- To cook the onions: Place all onion in the crockpot. Drizzle with oil then season with salt and pepper and mix to coat.Cover and cook on low for 8 hours. (Many times I will do this overnight and let it sit on "keep warm" until I am ready to make the dip.)
- To make the dip: Stir in sour cream, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, and hot sauce. Mix until everything is combined. Taste and season with additional salt and pepper if desired.Note: If you want a thicker dip you can remove the onions and drain the juices. I like to keep them because they are so flavor packed.
- To serve as a hot dip, keep in the slow cooker on the "keep warm" setting. To serve as a cold dip, transfer to a container and chill for at least 1 hour, or until you serve the dip.
