If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!
- Spice it up – Buffalo wing sauce not quite spicy enough for you? Crank the heat up a notch with a little bit of your favorite spicy salsa OR add in some diced jalapeños.
- Swap the cheese – Easily give your dip a different flavor profile with different cheeses! You can use mozzarella for a richer, creamier flavor, try it with a Mexican blend cheese, give it some extra heat with pepper jack, make it creamier with Gouda, or use a mix of your favorite cheeses. You really can’t go wrong with any cheese—let’s be honest!
Recipe Step by Step
I am going to highlight a few key steps in the recipe here, but make sure to jump down to the recipe card for comprehensive instructions on how to make Frank’s Buffalo Chicken Dip.

Place the chicken breast into your slow cooker, then top with Ranch seasoning and buffalo sauce.

Cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 3 hours.

Once cooked, shred the chicken with two forks, then add in the cream cheese, sour cream, and 1 cup of cheddar. Stir to combine.

Top the mixture with the rest of your cheddar cheese, garnish with green onions, then serve warm!
Recipe Tips
- Shred your own cheese – I highly recommend shredding your sharp cheddar straight off a block of cheese. This gives it the best gooey, cheesy texture and the richest flavor.
- If the cream cheese isn’t pre-softened when your chicken is done, pop the cold block of cream cheese into the crockpot, cover with the lid, then let it sit for 5 minutes. This will soften it just enough to mix smoothly into the dip.
- Serve warm! – This dip truly is unbeatable served warm. If you’re not serving your dip right away, simply keep it on the “warm” setting in your crockpot until you are ready to serve.
Recipe Short Cuts
If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, then here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!
- Prep it ahead of time – Get ahead by prepping your dip and keeping it in your crockpot on the “warm” setting until it’s time to serve it! Get ahead even more by prepping it in advance, letting it cool, then storing in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
- Make it in the oven – Not working with time to use your slow cooker? This recipe can easily be made in the oven. Just cook your chicken in a baking dish, shred, mix with your sauce, then serve. You can even use pre-cooked rotisserie chicken, so all you need to do is heat it up!
- Use pre-shredded cheese – I love the texture of freshly shredded cheese, but pre-shredded will work in a pinch too.
