Crockpot Steak Bites – The EASY Way!

This recipe for Crockpot Steak Bites is the perfect for a busy weeknight—you don’t have to break your grocery budget to enjoy tender, juicy steak for dinner! Instead, the low and slow cooking method does the work of making these steak bites delicious and succulent. No need to stir, no cooking in a pan on the stove, and no need to make the recipe in batches either!

Because they’re cut into perfect bite-sized pieces, you can whip up these Crock Pot Steak Bites for a party and serve them on toothpicks, but I usually make them as an easy weeknight meal with mashed potatoes for soaking up all the delicious au jus at the bottom of the slow cooker. You can also serve over roasted mashed cauliflower if you want to make the dish a little lighter.

Why I LOVE this recipe!

  • Dump-and-Go – Other than cutting the steak into pieces, there is pretty much no work involved in making this recipe! Simply add everything to the slow cooker, turn it on, and let it work its magic.
  • Kid-Friendly – Steak might not always be your kids’ first choice for dinner, but when it’s this tender, juicy, and flavorful, they’ll be sure to clean their plates. (As a bonus for you, there’s no need to cut their steak on the plate since it’s already in bite-sized pieces!)
  • Inexpensive – With only 5 budget-friendly ingredients, Crockpot Steak Bites are a great choice to help you stretch your grocery funds.
  • Delicious – Thanks to the onion soup seasoning and au jus, these steak bites have the flavor of pot roast—rich, beefy, and savory.

What to Serve with Crockpot Steak Bites

Since this dish has the classic flavors of pot roast, it will pair well with many of your favorite All-American side dishes. There are both classic options and some healthy options to keep it light.

Side Dish Ideas

  • Garlic Parmesan Mashed Potatoes – Although traditional mashed potatoes are good too, the garlic and cheese in this recipe pair well with Crockpot Steak Bites.
  • Steakhouse Salad– This one is quick and gives that steakhouse feel!
  • Instant Pot Baked Potatoes
  • Oven Roasted Green Beans – If you’re in the mood for a lighter side dish option!
  • Perfect Oven Roasted Vegetables
  • Incredible Baked Potato Wedges – You can never go wrong with steak and fries for dinner.
  • Oven Roasted Vegetables – Roasting brings out the best flavor in veggies!
  • Arugula Pear Salad – Perfectly light, crisp and refreshing salad.

You can choose one or add a few sides to make a wholesome, well rounded dinner.

Recipe Notes

This Crockpot Steak Bites recipe is as simple as promised! Just dump and go for a family friendly meal.

In this section I am going to go through a few tips and tricks I use when making this recipe to get the absolute best and most delicious results.

Make sure to scroll to the bottom for the FULL recipe card.

Ingredients for crockpot steak bites, including steak, butter, beef broth, and seasonings

Ingredients + Substitutions

  • Top sirloin steak or other cut of steak – Cut the meat into bite-sized pieces. I recommend sirloin just for affordability, but genuinely, any cut will work here, and even tough cuts can be tenderized by cooking over a long period, so grab what you have or what is on sale and cut it up!
  • Au jus gravy mix – This adds so much flavor to your Crockpot Steak Bites!
  • Onion soup mix – I love onion soup mix because it gives you that onion-y flavor without requiring you to slice or dice a bunch of onions.
  • Butter – Butter adds richness to both the steak bites and the gravy.
  • Beef broth – If you have homemade beef stock on hand, use it, but store-bought is just fine.
  • Fresh parsley – For garnish, if desired.
How to make crockpot steak bites: 1) add steak to crock pot 2) add seasonings 3) add butter 4) cook and serve

Recipe Tips

  1. Trim the steak while you cut it – When you’re cutting the steak into bite-sized pieces, remove the excess fat, along with any gristle, and discard it.
  2. Use unsalted butter – Both the au jus and onion soup mix packets have enough salt in them to season this recipe, so there’s no need for salted butter too.
  3. Don’t overcook – Unlike pot roast, steak bites are more lean. Although they won’t burn, if you leave them in the slow cooker for too long, they will get tougher. For perfect, tender Crockpot Steak Bites, stick with the lower end of the cooking time if possible.
  4. Freeze the leftover au jus – If you don’t use it all, you can freeze it and use it as gravy another day. Whatever you do, don’t pour it down the drain—it’s good stuff!

Recipe Short Cuts

If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!

  • Prep the steak in advance – You can cut the steak the day before to make assembling the recipe the next day a breeze.
  • Or assemble ahead of time – Another option is to add everything to the crockpot insert the night before, place the lid on top, and refrigerate it until you’re ready to cook. Let the insert sit on the countertop a bit to come to room temperature before putting it into your crockpot and turning it on.
  • Buy pre-cut steak bites – Some butcher shops and grocery stores sell steak that’s already cut into bite-sized pieces. Stew meat works too! This will help trim down your total time.

Recipe Variations

If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!

  • Crockpot Steak Bites With Mushrooms – Add a layer of sliced white or cremini mushrooms at the bottom of your crockpot to amp up the umami flavor and work some veggies into your dinner.
  • Peppery Crockpot Steak Bites – For a bit of a kick, add lots of freshly cracked black pepper to the crockpot. (If you like things fiery, try red pepper flakes!)
  • Crockpot Garlic Butter Steak Bites – Swap the onion soup mix for Garlic and Herb Soup Mix. Garnish with thyme, rosemary, or parsley.

Freezer Meal Instructions

Making this Crockpot Steak Bites recipe into a freezer meal is simple! Follow the steps below and you can store this recipe in the freezer for up to 6 months.

  1. Dump all of the ingredients into a gallon-size freezer bag.
  2. Let the ingredients thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then add them to the slow cooker and cook according to the recipe instructions.

Crockpot Steak Bites Leftovers

If you have leftovers after making Crockpot Steak Bites, then it is your lucky day! They save and reheat well, and can make the start of another delicious dish.

To save leftovers, separate into meal sized portions and then place in an airtight container and store:

  • in the refrigerator for 3-4 days
  • in the freezer up to a month

Leftover Recipes

Here are a few ways to repurpose those leftovers and give them a delicious makeover!

  • Steak Bite Meal Bowls – Reheat in a large skillet with a bit of vegetable oil or in the microwave. Add steak pieces to a bowl of mashed potatoes or rice with a side of steamed broccoli or corn for a complete meal.
  • Steak Bite Salad – Leftover Crockpot Steak Bites are a delicious protein-packed addition to your favorite bagged salad mix with a simple olive oil vinaigrette or a large bowl of Steakhouse Style House Salad.
  • French Dip Sandwiches – Give leftover au jus a second life by serving it alongside French dip sandwiches. (You can use the cubes of steak as a sandwich filling too if you’d like, but you’ll need to use a lot of cheese to keep them from falling out!)

If I were to make this in the instant pot do you know what setting I would use and how long I would cook it?

I haven’t done it in my pressure cooker so I don’t know that I can give you good directions. Let me know how it goes if you try it!
