In a bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder. Pour in warm water, then knead the dough until it takes on an elastic-like texture. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, then let it rest for 5 minutes.
2Working with each dough ball, press the dough between your hands to flatten, then use a floured rolling pin to roll the dough out into a thin sheet. Repeat with each of the dough balls.

- Soften the butter – Cold butter won’t incorporate into the dough as easily and can affect the texture of the finished tortillas. Be sure to soften it before starting this recipe.
- Flour your work surface as well as your tools– The dough will be sticky. To make sure you avoid dough sticking everywhere, I recommend generously flouring your work surface, rolling pin, and even your hands.

Yes! The flavor of homemade tortillas is so worth the little bit of extra time it takes to make them. Plus, you know exactly what’s going into them!
What kind of flour is best for making tortillas?
This recipe is designed for classic all-purpose flour, so I recommend sticking to that. Other types of flour will yield a different result.

- 1¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 3 tablespoons salted butter, softened
- ¾ cup warm water
Instructions
- Whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Use your hands to mix the butter into the flour until it incorporates evenly. It should be a fine pebble texture.
- Then pour in the warm water and work the mixture with your hands until it forms into a ball. It will be slightly sticky, but should be able to easily form to a ball.If it is crumbly after working it together, there is not enough water. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes on a floured surface until it becomes elastic. Then divide the dough in 12 equal pieces and roll each into a tight ball. Let rest for 5 minutes.
- Once the dough has rested, press the ball between your hands to flatten, then use a rolling pin to roll the ball out into a paper thin circle on a well floured surface. Move the tortilla to a piece of parchment paper. Repeat until all tortillas are rolled out.
- Heat a skillet over medium high heat. Once hot place a tortilla in the pan. Let it cook on one side until it starts to bubble (about 45 seconds) then flip and cook for about 30 seconds on the other side. Remove from skillet and repeat until all tortillas are cooked.
