Cinnamon Sugar Scones – The EASY Way!

These Cinnamon Sugar Scones are one of my go-to recipes for a delicious breakfast, snack, or even dessert.

They start with a classic scone that’s baked at a high heat to create a texture that is light and fluffy in the middle, but has those delicious crisped edges. After baking, the scones are finished off with a simple cinnamon and sugar topping for a little bit of extra sweetness and crunch.

These pastries are perfect for serving alongside other breakfast or brunch recipes or for enjoying on their own with a cup of your favorite coffee or tea.

Bonus: They’re ready in a total of 20 minutes!

Why I LOVE this recipe!

  • Minimal Ingredients – Just 5 kitchen staples and a simple cinnamon sugar topping to put together the best cinnamon sugar scones.
  • Perfect Texture – This recipe includes a couple of tips and tricks to creating a light, fluffy center with perfectly golden, slightly crispy edges.
  • Freezable – Want to prep ahead of time? Simply bake, cool, and freeze your scones for a quick and easy breakfast, snack, or dessert any time.
  • Kid approved! These are a classic and well loved cinnamon sugar kid flavor and the soft fluffy scone is perfect for little hands and little mouths

What to Serve with Cinnamon and Sugar Scones

Since this dish has the classic flavors of cinnamon and sugar, it will pair well with many of your favorite sweet breakfast recipes. However, you can totally go the sweet and savory route and serve it with your favorite more savory breakfast foods.

There are both classic options and some healthy options to keep it light.

Pairing Ideas

  • Bacon and Eggs – Fill your breakfast or brunch the classic way—with a crispy piece of bacon and eggs cooked your favorite way! The perfect savory to pair with these sweet scones.
  • Breakfast Casserole with Sausage and Hashbrowns – Looking for something a little more filling? This sausage and hashbrown casserole is it! It’s veggie-packed, loaded with sausage and bacon, and finished with melty cheddar cheese.
  • Fruit Salad – Keep it light and sweet with a generous helping of this fresh fruit salad made with strawberries, kiwi, blueberries, grapes, pineapple, raspberries, and blackberries.
  • Million Dollar Bacon– This sweet and savory candied bacon is always a huge hit!

You can choose one or add a few sides to make a wholesome, well rounded dinner.

Recipe Notes

This cinnamon sugar scone recipe is as simple as promised! Just 20 minutes for a family friendly snack.

In this section I am going to go through a few tips and tricks I use when making this recipe to get the absolute best and most delicious results.

Ingredients + Substitutions

  • All-Purpose Flour – I recommend sticking with regular all-purpose flour for the best texture.
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Baking Powder – To create a lighter, fluffier texture.
  • Salt
  • Heavy Cream
  • Cinnamon and Sugar – You’ll need a mixture of ground cinnamon and granulated sugar for the topping!
how to make cinnamon sugar scones 1) make the dough, 2) roll out and cut the dough, 3) line on a baking sheet, 4)bake and serve!

Recipe Tips

  1. Check your baking powder – Double check your baking powder to make sure it isn’t expired before you add it to the other ingredients. If it’s too old, it won’t serve its intended purpose, which is to create a lighter, fluffier texture.
  2. Line the baking sheet – I recommend lining the baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the scones from sticking and for easier cleanup.
  3. DO NOT over-mix the dough – Over-mixing the dough can result in a dry, dense, gummy texture. Stir the wet and dry ingredients only until just combined for a soft, light, and fluffy texture.
  4. If your dough is too sticky, add small amounts of flour at a time until it comes together. The texture will be a little bit sticky, but not so much that you can’t easily pat it out.
  5. Preheat the oven – The oven should be nice and hot before you add in the scones. The high heat creates the perfect browned, crispy edges with a soft, tender, and moist center.
  6. Cool for 5 minutes before adding the topping – When you add the cinnamon and sugar, you want the scones to be warm so it sticks, but not burning hot. I recommend letting them cool for just a few minutes first.

Recipe Short Cuts

If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!

  • Prep the dough in advance – To prep the dough in advance, simply mix the dough as directed, then cover the bowl and place it in the fridge for up to a day. To get even further ahead, portion and cut the scones out, lay them out on a baking sheet, and store them in the fridge. Only do this if you have the space for the baking sheet in your fridge!
  • Bake and store – While scones are best served fresh, you can bake the scones as directed, then store them at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Recipe Variations

If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!

  • Brown Sugar Cinnamon Scones – Swap the granulated sugar in the topping out for brown sugar for a warmer sweetness.
  • Glazed Cinnamon Sugar Scones – Whip up a simple glaze by mixing together powdered sugar and milk until a glaze consistency is reached. Drizzle that over the top of the scones along with the cinnamon and sugar.
  • Cinnamon Chip Scones – Want some extra cinnamon flavor? Try adding a sprinkle of cinnamon chips on top of the dough wedges before baking.

Freezer Instructions

Making this cinnamon sugar scone recipe into a freezer meal is simple! Follow the steps below and you can store this recipe in the freezer for up to 3 months.

  1. Assemble and bake the scones as directed, but leave off the cinnamon and sugar topping.
  2. Cool completely, then store in an airtight container or ziplock bag.
  3. Store the scones in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  4. When you’re ready to enjoy, thaw at room temperature or in the microwave or oven, then toss with the cinnamon sugar toppings and serve.

Cinnamon and Sugar Scones Leftovers

If you have leftovers after making cinnamon sugar scones, then it is your lucky day! They save and reheat well!

To save leftovers, place in an airtight container and store:

  • on the counter for 1-2 days
  • in the freezer up to 2 months

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups heavy cream

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425˚F
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Create a well in the flour and pour the cream into the well. Mix until the scone dough just comes together. The dough should hold together, but not be overly sticky.
  • Flour a surface and divide the dough in half. Form each half into a disc about 1.5-2" tall. Cut the disc into 6ths to form 6 triangles. (Cut like a pizza.)
  • Transfer each scone to a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the centers are set and the edges start to brown.
  • While the scones are baking, mix the cinnamon sugar together in a bowl.
  • Let cool for 5 minutes then toss the cinnamon sugar mixture over each scone to coat, or place the cinnamon sugar in a large zip top bag and gently shake the scone in the sugar mixture.
