  • Puff Spirals with a Kick!– If you enjoy a little bit of spice in your food, sprinkle in a teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the mixture!

Lay the spirals onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the puff pastry is slightly golden brown.

Recipe Tips

  1. Cut with serrated knife – This will ensure the dough won’t be pressed and miss-shaped. It will be so much easier to slice cleanly if you use a serrated knife.
  2. Don’t thaw too long – If the dough sits at room temperature too long, the butter inside will begin to melt and will cause the dough to be thick and not rise properly.
  3. Squeeze liquid from spinach – Frozen spinach is really watery as it thaws. I would recommend thawing the spinach in the fridge or at room temperature just a bit. You can remove the excess water by squeezing it with a kitchen towel, a fine mesh sieve or simply squeezing it with your hands over the sink.
  4. Soften cream cheese – Be sure to allow time for your cream cheese to soften so the ingredients blend together easier.

Recipe Short Cuts

If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!

  • Prep spinach mixture in advance – You can prep the filling mixture up to 3 days in advance. Simply spread it on your pastry dough, slice and place in oven when you’re ready to heat and serve.
  • Prep & slice in advance – In advance, you can actually follow all recipe steps up until cooking in the oven. Place your slices in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to heat and serve, place spirals on parchment paper lined baking sheet and place in oven.

Recipe FAQ’s

Where do I find puff pastry in the grocery store?

Puff pastry is found in the frozen section of most grocery stores. It’s typically located near the frozen desserts and pie crusts. It’s sold in boxes as sheets or blocks.

Are puff pastry and phyllo dough the same thing?

Not exactly. The main difference is that puff pastry is a dough, laminated in butter, that rises into airy layers. It is light and incredibly flaky. Phyllo is paper-thin, unleavened, low fat sheets that are brushed with butter or oil to create a delicate, shattering crisp.

How do I avoid messing up puff pastry?

To avoid ruining puff pastry, keep it cold and work gently to preserve the layers. You don’t want it to get too warm before baking or the dough will become dense and won’t rise.
