Ingredients + Substitutions
- Flour – I use all-purpose flour in my homemade Bisquick mix. You can substitute in some whole wheat flour if you like, but it may make your recipes a bit more dense.
- Baking powder – A leavening agent that will help your pancakes, baked goods, etc. rise.
- Sugar – A small amount of sugar adds just a touch of sweetness for well-rounded flavor. You can leave out the sugar if you prefer.
- Salt – Enhances the flavors. You can use table salt, low-sodium salt, or fine sea salt.
- Butter – I prefer unsalted butter so that I can better control the salt content of my homemade Bisquick mix. You can use salted butter if it’s what you have on hand, but you’ll probably want to reduce or omit the salt or your baking mix may end up too salty.
Make sure to see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full quantities and ingredients list.
Recipe Variation
If you love this recipe as much as we do and want a quick way to change it up for variety, this tip will do the trick!
- Homemade bisquick with shortening– You can use vegetable shortening if you prefer. It should be chilled and cut into small cubes and is best mixed in a food processor to help the shortening break into smaller bits and really incorporate into the mix.
- Make whole-wheat Bisquick mix– Swap in whole-wheat flour for a heartier mix. Note the items you make with a whole-wheat version will likely have a denser consistency.
- Add a garlic and herb twist– Mix in 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning and 2 teaspoons of garlic powder for garlic-herb homemade Bisquick mix.
Recipe Step by Step
I am going to highlight a few key steps in the recipe here, but make sure to jump down to the recipe card for comprehensive instructions on how to make Homemade Bisquick Mix.
Add flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt to a large bowl.
Mix together until well-incorporated.
Use a microplane grater or the fine side of a cheese grater to grate the butter over the flour mixture.
Stir until the butter is worked into the dry ingredients.
Recipe Tips
- Use COLD butter – Make sure your butter is very cold, preferably straight from the refrigerator. If it is too soft, you won’t be able to grate it.
- Grate the butter finely – Use a Microplane grater, the fine side of a handheld grater, or a box grater for the smallest pieces of butter possible.
- Use fresh baking powder – Check the expiration date on your baking powder. You want it to be fresh or your mix might result in goods that don’t rise enough or at all.
