  • Bisquick Cheddar Bay Biscuits Recipe

These Bisquick Cheddar Bay Biscuits are one of my favorite side dishes to whip up for dinner.

It is a quick and easy homemade version of a fan-favorite from Red Lobster—cheesy, buttery garlic biscuits loaded with flavor and topped with an insanely delicious garlic butter.

This recipe is super fast thanks to the shortcut of using Bisquick as the base. All you need in addition to the Bisquick is milk, cheese, butter, garlic salt, and parsley.

These biscuits are the best simple side dish to pair with any meal! They’re best right away, but storing and reheating works great too.

Why I LOVE this recipe!

  • Quick and easy – Just 6 ingredients and a few minutes of prep needed. Plus, no shaping needed. Just scoop the dough and drop it onto the pan.
  • Made right at home – I mean, what’s better than being to make your favorite restaurant food without having to leave your house?
  • Perfect texture and flavor – Soft, moist, buttery, fluffy, crispy, garlicky, cheesy…side dishes don’t get better than that!

What are Cheddar Bay Biscuits?

Cheddar Bay Biscuits are a classic Red Lobster side dish. They’re soft, buttery biscuits that are loaded up with cheddar cheese and topped with garlic butter which creates a rich, savory flavor and delicious crispy edges.

Recipe Notes

This cheddar bay biscuit recipe is as simple as promised! Just a 3 main ingredients and 10 minutes of prep for a family friendly bread.

In this section I am going to go through a few tips and tricks I use for how to cheddar bay biscuits to get the absolute best and most delicious results.

Make sure to scroll to the bottom for the FULL recipe card.

Ingredients + Substitutions

cheddar bay biscuit ingredients.
  • Bisquick – No all-purpose flour needed. Bisquick mix is the perfect base for this Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuit recipe. No special, extra ingredients required!
  • Cheddar Cheese – I recommend sharp cheddar cheese for the best flavor! I use 1/2 cup, but feel free to add more if you like your biscuits extra cheesy.
  • Milk – Whatever milk you have on-hand will work. For the best texture, use whole milk!
  • Garlic Butter Topping – Our garlic butter topping is made with a simple mix of butter, garlic salt, and dried parsley. I use salted butter because the biscuits are rich with a salty undertone, but you can use regular if you need to. If you don’t have garlic salt, you can use garlic powder and regular table salt.

Make sure to see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full quantities and ingredients list.

Recipe Variations

If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!

  • Extra Buttery Biscuits – If you like your biscuits extra buttery (and a little closer to the traditional Red Lobster biscuits), then you can double the butter mixture and brush the biscuits before and after baking. This will make them extra rich and create crispier edges.
  • Jalapeño Cheddar Bay Biscuits – Try adding a kick of heat by mixing some chopped jalapeños into the biscuit dough.

Recipe Step by Step

I am going to highlight a few key steps in the recipe here, but make sure to jump down to the recipe card for comprehensive instructions on how to make Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuit mix.

  1. In a large bowl, stir together bisquick mix, cheese, and milk.

2. Use a spoon or cookie scoop to portion the dough out onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 375ºF for 12-14 minutes or until the tops of the cheddar biscuits are golden brown.

3. In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, garlic salt, and parsley.

4. Brush the baked biscuits with the garlic butter topping, then serve warm!

Recipe Tips

  1. Don’t over-mix the dough – When you mix everything together, make sure that you stop stirring as soon as all of the ingredients are combined. Over-mixing can create a dry, dense texture.
  2. Grease the baking sheet – Make sure to grease your baking sheet with a thin layer of cooking spray before adding on the biscuits. An ungreased cookie sheet can cause the biscuits to stick. If you don’t have cooking spray, try layering the baking sheet with parchment paper instead.
  3. Portion the dough evenly – While a “heaping spoonful” can mean a couple of different things, I do recommend making sure that each of your heaping spoonfuls are roughly the same in size. That way all of the biscuits cook at the same rate!
  4. Serve warm – These biscuits are best served hot and fresh out of the oven! (Don’t worry. The leftovers are delicious too!)

Recipe Short Cuts

If you need to make these Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuits, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!

  • Make the topping while the biscuits bake – To save just a little bit of time, I recommend putting together the garlic butter topping while the biscuits are in the oven. That way, once the biscuits are baked, you can top them off and dig in.
  • Make the dough in advance – To get a little bit ahead on prep, try mixing up the biscuit dough the day before you plan to bake them. Then, when you’re ready to bake, simply portion out the dough and pop them in the oven. Alternatively, portion the dough out, then store that in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to bake the biscuits, simply thaw the dough overnight in the fridge, then bake them as directed.
  • Prepare and bake the biscuits ahead of time – The baked biscuits can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or in the freezer for 1-2 months. To get really ahead of it, simply bake the biscuits ahead of time, store them, then reheat them when you’re ready to eat them.

  2. Wrap each biscuit tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a ziplock bag.
  3. Store in the freezer for up to 1 month.
  4. When you’re ready to serve, microwave or warm in the oven until heated through or thaw at room temperature.

Recipe FAQ’s

What makes Cheddar Bay biscuits so good?

The thing that sets Cheddar Bay biscuits apart from regular biscuits is, of course, the cheddar cheese. The real star of the show, though, is that garlicky, buttery topping! It adds the most mouthwatering and delicious flavor.

How do you keep Bisquick biscuits from crumbling?

The key is to make sure that you’re measuring your dry ingredients—in this case Bisquick mix—carefully. For the most accurate results, spoon the Bisquick mix into the measuring cup, then level it off gently with your finger. This ensures you’re getting exactly the right amount of dry ingredients so that the biscuits. That way the biscuits have plenty of moisture to hold together nicely.

Why are my Bisquick biscuits dense?

If your biscuits end up dense, then you may have over-mixed the dough. Mixing the dough too much can create a dense, dry texture. Mix only until everything is combined!

Added the parsley to batter and substituted garlic powder for garlic salt. Used melted butter to brush on top. Next time will add more garlic powder to the batter
