Ingredients + Substitutions
- Ground Beef — This makes the sliders easy! Skirt steak is the traditional meat for a philly cheesesteak, but ground beef allows us to have the flavor in a much quicker and easier recipe. I usually use lean ground beef because there is less fat to drain. You can use any beef because you will drain the fat anyways REALLY well in this recipe.
- Green Bell Pepper — Green is less sweet than other peppers, so it really is perfect for these sliders.
- Sweet Yellow Onion — You can use white onions if you prefer. The flavor is slightly different, but similar enough and will still infuse the beef with delicious essence.
- Seasonings — Garlic powder, salt, pepper, and onion powder are all you need to give bring all the flavors together.
- Cream Cheese —You can lighten this up by using light cream cheese or Neufchatel here. Make sure that you take time to soften the cream cheese because this will allow the flavors to blend completely together.
- Slider Rolls — I really love Kings rolls because they are incredibly soft. *Bonus – 2 packs of 12 fit perfectly into a 9×13 pan. You can also use plain white dinner rolls, ciabatta or wheat dinner rolls in this recipe.
- Provolone Cheese — Fresh slices of provolone from the deli counter or pre-sliced from the cheese section will work equally well. Depending on your taste preference smoked provolone will also deliver a great taste.
- Butter — Salted or unsalted butter will work for this recipe. Butter is a must so you can spread it on the tops of the buns.
- Garlic Salt — The melted butter and garlic salt mixture gets brushed onto the tops of the rolls and is an amazing flavor!
Recipe Tips
- Use a large skillet — The recipe calls for 2 lbs of ground beef and you’ll also be adding veggies, so make sure you have a pan big enough to hold it all.
- Hot Pan — When you start, make sure you heat up your pan so that you can hear the sizzling sound of beef hitting it. This will add to the flavor and texture of the dish helping with caramelization to give you that traditional Philly Cheesesteak flavor.
- DRAIN —This is VERY important. BEFORE you add the seasonings to the beef, onions and peppers, you want to drain all that grease out, This will ensure that you don’t have soggy rolls on your sliders.
- Onions and Bell Peppers — Have your onions and bell peppers already finely chopped so you can add them to the beef and cook everything together. Since we are serving these on slider rolls, finely chopping your vegetables is important. No one wants a giant veggie taking over their Philly Cheesesteak Slider! When you start to smell the aroma of onions and peppers wafting through the air you’ll know it’s almost dinner time.
- Cut – before and after — Hawaiian rolls come attached to each other so you can easily slice them horizontally in half before assembling. When you finish adding the cheese, run a knife along the top lines to cut through the sandwiches. This is the best part – you’ll take the melted garlic butter and brush the tops. The seasoned butter then melts down and around each side of the sandwiches and the flavor really bursts. This allows the garlic butter to soak into the sides of the sliders and also makes it easier to serve once baked.
- Scale down —This recipe makes 24 sliders but you can easily cut it in half and only use 1 pack of Hawaiian rolls and one pound of beef. You will use a 9×9 baking dish if you cut it in half.
Recipe Short Cuts
If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!
