What is special about Hawaiian Rolls?
Hawaiian rolls, also known as Hawaiian sweet rolls, are a type of soft and slightly sweet bread that originated in Hawaii. While most people think the sweet flavor comes from pineapple juice, that’s actually not on the package label—although many homemade versions do add it to the dough! The rolls are typically light and fluffy, with a golden crust on the outside. And I love them because they’re perfect for making this breakfast sliders recipe!

Ingredients + Substitutions
- Hawaiian rolls – I highly recommend using Hawaiian rolls for this recipe because they add the perfect sweetness and texture to the sliders. However, if you can’t find them, you can use any soft dinner rolls or slider buns.
- Breakfast sausage – Any breakfast sausage will work for this recipe, whether it’s pork, chicken, or turkey. I generally use a classic pork breakfast sausage.
- Eggs – For a classic breakfast sandwich!
- Cheese – Colby jack cheese adds a nice mild flavor to these sliders and it melts beautifully. Cheddar cheese, American cheese slices, or another melty cheese would also work well.
- Salt and pepper – To taste.
For the glaze
- Butter – Melt this in the microwave or a small saucepan.
- Maple syrup – I recommend pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup.
Make sure to see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full quantities and ingredients list.
Recipe Variations
If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!
- Breakfast sliders with bacon – Instead of sausage, use cooked strips of bacon for a classic breakfast sandwich flavor, or level it up even more with my Million Dollar Bacon.
- Ham and cheese breakfast sliders – Swap out the sausage for sliced deli ham or leftover holiday ham.
- Vegetarian breakfast sliders – Skip the meat altogether and add some sliced avocado, tomato, and spinach for a veggie twist on these sliders.
- Garlic butter breakfast sliders – Amp up the savory flavor by swapping the maple butter glaze with garlic butter.
Recipe Step by Step
I am going to highlight a few key steps in the recipe here, but make sure to jump down to the recipe card for comprehensive instructions on how to make Hawaiian roll breakfast sliders.
- Step 1– Place the cooked eggs onto the bottom half of the rolls.
- Step 2– Add the sausage patties over the eggs.
- Step 3– Top with sliced Colby jack cheese.
- Step 4– Add the tops of the Hawaiian rolls and brush with maple butter.
Recipe Tips
- Drain the grease from the pan – This will prevent the sliders from getting soggy.
- Make the eggs in the same pan as the sausage – This will make the eggs more flavorful and keep them from sticking to the skillet.
- Don’t scramble the eggs – You can if you want, but I prefer cooking the eggs over low heat until they form a “sheet” or omelet. Then I just transfer the whole thing to the slider rolls, which is much easier to eat than breakfast sliders filled with pieces of scrambled eggs.
- Cut between the rolls after assembling – This allows the glaze to run between the Hawaiian rolls, infusing your breakfast sliders with flavor.
Recipe Short Cuts
If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!
- Use pre-cooked sausage patties – If you’re short on time, using pre-cooked sausage patties is a great option.
- Make ahead of time – Assemble the sandwiches the night before and store them in the refrigerator. Then just pop them in the oven in the morning for a quick and delicious breakfast.
