Recipe Variations
If you love this recipe as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!
- Make it low carb – Skip the rice and use extra lettuce or cauliflower rice as the base.
- Add cheese – Sprinkle shredded cheese or cotija on top for an extra layer of flavor.
- Switch the protein – Try grilled chicken, shrimp, or even tofu using the same carne asada marinade.
Recipe Step by Step
I am going to highlight a few key steps in the recipe here, but make sure to jump down to the recipe card for comprehensive instructions on how to make carne asada bowls.

While the meat is marinating, prep the rice and the veggies. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high. Once hot add the onions and bell pepper slices to the skillet. Cook 4-6 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions are translucent and fragrant.

Assemble the bowls by starting with a base of rice and chopped romaine. Add sliced carne asada.

Add beans and sauteed veggies.

Add sliced carne asada and all your toppings.
Recipe Tips
- Don’t skip the marinade time – Even just 20 minutes makes a big difference in flavor and tenderness. If you have more time, letting it marinate longer will deepen the flavor even more.
- Slice against the grain – After resting, cut the steak into thin slices against the grain to keep it tender and easy to chew. This step is key for getting that classic carne asada texture.
- Let the steak rest – Give the steak about 5 minutes to rest after cooking before slicing. This helps keep all those flavorful juices inside instead of running out.
- Build your bowl in layers – Start with rice and lettuce, then add the warm ingredients and finish with toppings!
Recipe Short Cuts
If you need to make this recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!
- Use pre-cooked rice – Microwaveable rice packets make this super quick.
- Buy pre-cut veggies – Save time on slicing onions and peppers.
- Use store-bought pico and guac – A great shortcut without sacrificing flavor.
- Marinate ahead – Prep the steak the night before so it’s ready to cook.
