Turkey Sliders – The EASY Way!

These Hawaiian roll slider sandwiches are perfect for dinner, lunch, or even a heavy appetizer when you are watching the football game or headed to a potluck or BBQ.

Turkey and cheese sliders are small enough for little hands to grab, fun to eat, and taste fantastic! Despite how decadent these sliders feel, they are ready in 30 minutes and only require 10 minutes of prep. That is a win in my book!

Make sure to see some of my other popular slider recipes like my Italian Grinder Sliders, Shredded Chicken Sliders, and my Cheeseburger Sliders.

Why I LOVE this recipe!

  • Appetizer or dinner! Because theses turkey and cheese sliders are small they make a great appetizer on their own to serve to a group, or you can serve a couple together, paired with some other side dishes for an easy dinner idea!
  • One pan – These all bake easily in one pan making for less clean up.
  • Lots of flavor! The sandwiches may be small but they are loaded with many layers of comforting flavors.
  • Scalable for family or friends – Perfect for serving 1-2 for kids and 3-4 for adults. They are also great for scaling up to take to parties or barbecues.
  • Save and reheat well – These make great leftovers for lunches through the week and are great to make and freeze to deliver to a friend!

Recipe Notes

This recipe is as simple as promised! Just a few minutes to prep and 20 minutes to bake for a family friendly meal.

In this section I am going to go through a few tips and tricks I usefor how to make THE BEST turkey cheese sliders recipe to get the absolute best and most delicious results.

Make sure to scroll to the bottom for the FULL recipe card.

Ingredients for making turkey sliders including Hawaiian rolls, provolone cheese, turkey, parsley, butter, sugar, and dijon mustard.

Ingredients + Substitutions

  • Kings Hawaiian rolls – I prefer these because they are SUPER SOFT and the sweetness of the bread really makes a great flavor profile. My favorite part is that two 12 packs of Hawaiian Rolls fit snugly in a 9×13 pan. If you use a smaller pan (which works too!), you will need to adjust the number of rolls you use to fit your pan. You can also use plain white dinner rolls, or wheat dinner rolls in this recipe if you prefer.
  • Turkey- I make these sliders year round so I generally use freshly sliced turkey from the deli counter or pre-sliced meat found in the refrigerated section. I prefer thinly sliced either way. If it is during the holiday season, I will also use leftover turkey from our whole turkey to make them in place of deli meat.
  • Provolone cheese sliced- Again, either freshly sliced from the deli counter or pre-sliced in the cheese section will work equally well.

For the Glaze

  • Butter– I use salted, but unsalted can also work
  • Sugar– I use white sugar to create this honey mustard type sauce because sugar is easy to pour and mix, but you could use honey for great results also!
  • Dijon mustard– Dijon is my preference for the sauce but in a pinch I have used both spicy mustard and yellow mustard with good results.
  • Parsley – fresh or dried can be used, just make sure it is finely chopped.
Step 1 of how to make turkey cheese sliders- Cut rolls in half and layer on sliced turkey.

First, cut the Hawaiian Rolls horizontally and place the bottoms in a baking dish. Layer sliced turkey on top of the rolls.

Step 1 of how to make turkey cheese sliders- add provolone cheese on top of the turkey.

Add provolone cheese on top of the turkey.

Step 3 of how to make turkey cheese sliders- Combine butter mustard, sugar and parsley to make a sweet buttery mustard sauce to glaze the sandwiches

Make the sweet mustard glaze by whisking together the melted butter, mustard, sugar, and parsley.

Step 4 of how to make turkey cheese sliders- Place the tops of the Hawaiian rolls back on and spread the rolls with the sweet mustard sauce.

Place the tops of the Hawaiian Rolls back on and brush the tops with the butter glaze.

Recipe Tips

  1. Cut- before and after! The easiest way to make these is to cut the rolls horizontally before breaking any of them apart. That way you can just make 1 cut for each package as opposed to 12 smaller cuts. Then once all of the sandwiches are assembled, but before putting on the glaze, I like to run a knife along the lines to cut through the sandwiches. This does 2 things, first it makes the Turkey Cheese Sliders easier to serve since you cut through any overlapping meat and cheese. Second, it allows the glaze to seep through the gaps of each sandwich, really infusing the flavor of the glaze to every slider.
  2. Scale- This recipe makes 24 small slider sandwiches. If you prefer, you can cut the recipe in half to make 12 small slider sandwiches. You can use an 9×9 square baking dish for a half recipe.
  3. Want more spice? Try using peppered turkey and spicy mustard to add spice to these sliders. The heat marries the sweetness of these turkey and cheese Hawaiian sliders perfectly!

Recipe Short Cuts

If you need to make this turkey sliders recipe, but are extra short on time, here are a few ideas that can help make this recipe even faster!

  • Assemble beforehand– You can assemble the bread, meat and cheese and tightly wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 24-48 hours in advance.
  • Mix the sauce beforehand– You can mix up the sauce up to 3 days in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator. Once ready to use, microwave until melted and stir to combine.
  • Prepare as a freezer meal– This can help you have this ready up to 6 months in advance. Follow the instructions in the freezer meal section below.

Recipe Variations

If you love these Hawaiian roll turkey sliders as much as we do and want some quick ways to change it up for variety, these little tips will do the trick!

  • Turkey and Swiss Sliders – Turkey and cheese sliders on Hawaiian rolls are such a classic. For a fun twist on this classic, simply swap out the provolone for swiss and make as directed in the recipe below.
  • Turkey Bacon Cheese Sliders – Who doesn’t love a little bacon? For these sliders, make bacon however you like and then simply add it to the turkey and cheese sandwich before baking.
  • Ham Turkey Sliders – For another meat variation, try adding ham to the turkey and provolone. The sweetness of the ham makes for one delicious slider!
  • Turkey Cranberry Sliders– If you are in the holiday season, it is fun to add some cranberry sauce between the turkey and cheese layer!

Freezer Meal Instructions

These turkey cheese sliders are great to make and freeze ahead for a busy night or to give to a friend. Below are instructions to ensure they stay fresh when freezing.

  1. Assemble the meat and cheese on the rolls and place in a freezer safe bag or air tight container. It can be helpful to wrap them tightly in plastic wrap before putting them into a bag or Tupperware to keep the filling from sliding out.
  2. Make the honey mustard sauce and store in another freezer safe container.
  3. Freeze both sauce and sandwiches.
  4. When ready to enjoy the sandwiches, thaw the sauce in the microwave or by leaving in the fridge overnight. Unwrap the rolls and transfer to an oven safe baking dish if needed. Brush the sauce over the frozen rolls.
  5. Bake as directed.

You can choose one or add a few sides to make a wholesome, well rounded dinner.

What happens if you use ‘sauce’ inside the slider and coat with butter on top prior to baking? Seems the sauce on top would be rather messy?

I loved the concept of this so we made a few adjustments by adding stuffing and swapping the dijon for turkey gravy with cranberry sauce on the side. It just needed a little extra time in the oven to heat all the way through but my family LOVED it! It was a nice Thanksgiving teaser.

Would honey mustard work for this recipe instead of dijon?

Yes I think it will be a little sweeter though.
